Mental Illnesses as Viewed by the Black Community

Mental illness correlates with ableism and affects the performance and well-being of the black community as a whole.

 

As a person of color, awareness of mental illness within our communities and understanding how to better treat them is important for the well being of our community and people.

The correlation of mental illness to the topic of Social Justice and its importance:
How are mental illnesses viewed in the black community?

Mental illnesses are not properly addressed or ackowledged in the black community.

 

Mental illnesses are viewed as a "white people thing".

 

Blakc people are not supposed to have mental illnesses, and if they do, they are percieved as weak and not taken seriously.

 

Misdiagnosis is common when it comes to people of color and mental illnesses.

 

Because of misdiagnosis, POC commonly do not receive proper treatment for mental illnesses.
